Scope and Contents: This collection consists of approximately 40,200 photographs of Southern Illinois University Carbondale depicting campus buildings, campus construction, student life and activities, entertainment, faculty and staff, athletics, Greek organizations, academics, class activities, and other topics related to the university. Some highlights include scenes from Shurtleff College, which became Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and the Moo and Cackle riots of 1963. Series 1 through 5 contain photographs compiled into an artificial collection from various creators, organized into Things, Events, Places, People, and Oversized Photographs. These photographs date from the late 19th century to the 1980s. Series 6 comprises the bulk of the collection, roughly 40,000 negatives with corresponding proof sheets created by the university's Photographic Services department. Series 6 dates from the 1940s-1980s and is organized chronologically.
