In Series 1, the Edwin H. Wilson Archives, Wilson had, in addition to files under individual names, mixed surname files, such as surnames beginning with "Ha" or "He."  Wilson seemed to use these files primarily for single letters to or from an individual, thus apparently not warranting a separate file.  However, in processing the complete collection, it was discovered that in many instances, early letters between Wilson and certain individuals were filed in the "Mixed Surname" folders, while later letters were found in folders specific to that individual, that person having assumed greater importance in Wilson's files.  The effort to sort all these letters would have been considerable, so researchers are urged to look not only in the folder(s) for a particular person, but also in the mixed surname files and in files connected to organizations with which the individual was involved.

 

Materials in the second and third accessions, with the exception of the Fellowship for Religious Humanists records, had little or no original order.  Some of the papers were in labeled folders, but most papers were found loose.  Papers in folders labeled by Wilson, were placed in new folders with the same labels.  Materials in the "Dixon case" box were extremely jumbled.  However, careful examination of the papers found some connection between contiguous stacks of papers;  these were foldered in the order found and labeled "Loose Papers."  A lot of newspaper clippings and entire issues of newspapers were also found in this box; these were placed in folders labeled "Newspaper Clippings."  Many of the clippings were not identified by date or newspaper name, so trying to arrange these in any kind of order would have been very difficult.
