Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of dealer catalogs, pamphlets, speeches, photographs, articles, bulletins and copies of letters.  The majority of these materials relate to Abraham Lincoln, Illinois history and United States history.

Biographical Note

Clint Clay Tilton (1870-1946) was a Danville, Illinois, printer, reporter, and later newspaper owner and publisher.  After retiring from the press, Tilton served as president of the Illinois State Historical Society (1939-1940), presiding at the annual meeting held in Carbondale, May 1940.  Tilton had a lifelong interest in Abraham Lincoln and spent over forty years collecting books and other items relating to Lincoln and American history, which he donated to Southern Illinois University.

Acquisition Method: In 1944, Mr. Tilton donated his entire library, consisting of books, pamphlets, and other materials, to Southern Illinois Normal University (now Southern Illinois University--Carbondale).

Processing Information: When the collection was processed by Special Collections, a number of folders contained what appear to be library acquisitions cards, evidence that the collection continued to expand after it was received by the library.  It will also be noted that some of the additions were apparently added at the end of the collection rather than being inserted in alphabetical order (see boxes 38-40).  A booklet describing the original gift and donations from other individuals can be found in Box 37, Folder 1.

Other Note: Clint Clay Tilton Library of Lincolniana and Americana is located in the American Heritage room in Morris Library, Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
